01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

At Kyusenbo, the Kumamoto ramen has plenty of pork-bone flavour but a lighter feel than a particularly rich bowl. Diners have noted the crunch of garlic chips, and some describe the noodles as straight and thicker than Hakata or Nagahama ramen noodles. It’s a good option when you want tonkotsu ramen that isn’t all heaviness.

The classic ramen costs ¥780. Other choices include takana ramen, garlic ramen, spicy spring onion ramen and spicy miso ramen. Add toppings such as wood ear mushrooms, takana, garlic or spring onion to tailor your bowl. At lunchtime, sets pair ramen with gyoza and a small serving of rice, or with half a portion of fried rice. For a more substantial noodle meal, you can order a large serving or an extra portion of noodles; a salted rice ball makes a simple finish.

Alongside ramen, there are gyoza and fried rice. In the evening, snacks such as stir-fried takana and an omelette with spring onions go well with beer or the house lemon sour. The restaurant is described as having mostly counter seating and being an easy place to dine solo.
